Meghan Russell, The Washington Post | May 2, 2012 Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative is on the verge of breaking ground for the Calvert County portion of its Southern Maryland Reliability Project, which the co-op says is needed to ensure that power failures do not occur for the growing number of customers. “Construction’s about to start,” President and chief executive Austin J. Slater Jr. said of the $100 million project at the commissioners’ meeting April 17.  “We are confident we can get this done to every customer's and every homeowner’s satisfaction.  It’s necessary to ensure we have power we can rely on without disruption.”  Read more…

Proposed Legislation on How Electric Coops Make Decisions

The draft legislation including the disclosure of power demand / load and forecasting information at the distribution level and requiring a G&T to secure approval from two-thirds of its members prior to entering into debt or energy contracts seem to be in line with what a cooperatives board role should be, that of protecting the member’s interest.  Read more...
